Our Infinite Fates by Laura Steven

Evelyn and Arden have been in love—and at odds—for thousands of years. In every lifetime, they find each other… and end up killing each other. In her current life, Evelyn is close to her family and just wants to stay under the radar. She’s especially focused on her younger sister, who’s seriously ill and needs Evelyn’s stem cells to survive. The last thing she wants is for Arden to show up and start the whole cycle all over again.

As Evelyn tries to make it past her birthday without history repeating itself, we get flashbacks to their past lives together. In one, they were both men fighting in the French Revolution. In another, they were girls growing up on a pirate ship. No matter the time or place, they keep being drawn back to each other—only for things to end in tragedy. Evelyn is determined to figure out why, and how to finally break the pattern. She thinks Arden knows more than he’s letting on, but he’s not exactly forthcoming.

When they do finally reunite in the present, Evelyn makes a deal with Arden to ensure the medical procedure for her sister can happen. There’s a strong thread of mystery throughout the story—both in trying to figure out who Arden is this time around, and why they keep hurting each other.

The book has been compared to The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and This Is How You Lose the Time War, and I see those vibes. It has that dreamy, time-spanning, bittersweet romance energy, but it also stands on its own in a cool way.

My one critique is that the story felt a little split. The first three-quarters are all about Evelyn and Arden’s different lives and their connection, and I was totally into that. But the last quarter takes a turn—it answers some big questions, which is great, but the tone shifts sharply, and it almost felt like a different story for a bit. It does come back around by the end, though.

If you liked the Divine Rivals duology, I think this one will be right up your alley. I had similar feelings about the pacing and structure with that series, too.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read—emotional, mysterious, and even funny at times. I’m definitely curious to see what Lauren Steven writes next.

The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue meets This is How You Lose The Time War in this fantastical love story that defies death as two souls reincarnate through the centuries.

They’ve loved each other in a thousand lifetimes. They’ve killed each other in every one.

Evelyn remembers all her past lives. She also remembers that in every single one, she’s been murdered before her eighteenth birthday by Arden, a supernatural being whose soul―and survival―is tethered to hers.

The problem is that she’s quite fond of the life she’s in now, and her little sister needs her for bone marrow transplants in order to stay alive. If Evelyn wants to save her sister, she’ll have to:

1. Find the centuries-old devil who hunts her through each life―before they find her first.
2. Figure out why she’s being hunted and finally break their curse.
3. Try not to fall in love.
